After a first half that saw the Portland Timbers dominate possession against the San Jose Earthquakes, both teams remained scoreless. The second half saw the Quakes' Alan Gordon get sent off with his second yellow of the night and left San Jose with ten men.
But it wasn't until the 78th minute that the Timbers were able to break the deadlock. After a foul to Kalif Alhassan just outside the box, team captain Will Johnson lined up a free kick. This is what happened:
