Gold Cup | Darren Mattocks scores key goal for Jamaica; Darlington Nagbe called up to USMNT

Darren Mattocks, Jamaica, Gold Cup, 7.16.17

Portland Timbers forward Darren Mattocks converted a key penalty kick for Jamaica Sunday to help the Reggae Boyz to a 1-1 draw with El Salvador in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The result placed them in second place in their group and now sets up a quarterfinal match against Canada on July 20 (4:30pm PT, FS1).

Timbers teammate Alvas Powell also started the match and played the full 90 in the draw. Powell almost scored right at the end of the first half with a well-taken effort from the right side that forced a save from the Salvadoran goalkeeper.

Also of note on Sunday, Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe was one of six additions to Bruce Arena's U.S. Men's National Team squad to take part in the knockout stage of the tournament. The U.S. wrapped up the top spot in their group on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Nicaragua and will now face El Salvador in the quarterfinals on Wednesday (6pm PT, FS1).

Finally, Timbers midfielder David Guzmán and Costa Rica cruised to a 3-0 win over French Guiana this past Friday to secure the top spot in their group. Guzmán came in to the match in the second half to help close out the win.

The Ticos' quarterfinal match is also this Wednesday against Panama (3pm PT, FS1).
