International Notebook | Thorns FC players excel as SheBelieves Cup, Algarve Cup open play

Allie Long, USWNT vs. Germany, 3.1.17

A host of Thorns FC players were in action yesterday at both the SheBelieves Cup in Pennsylvania and the Algarve Cup in Portgual.

In the U.S. WNT's opening game against Germany, Thorns Allie Long and Tobin Heath both started and played the full 90 minutes while Lindsey Horan came on in the 79th minute as the Americans won 1-0. Heath had a hand in the goal as her initial shot deflected off a German defender before settling for Lynn Williams who fired it home. Long received postgame plaudits as she was named the Woman of the Match.

The U.S. next play England Saturday (2pm PT, FOX).

In the tournament's earlier game, Amandine Henry and France beat England 2-1 on a last-second goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Henry wore the captain's armband for the French. They'll take on Germany this Saturday as well at 11:15am PT.

In Portugal at the Algarve Cup, Christine Sinclair scored her 166th career goal for Canada as they beat Denmark 1-0. The forward pounced on a poor defensive clearance by the Danish backline before slotting the ball home into the lower left corner.

Canada continues their tournament run Friday against Russia at 7am PT.

Hayley Raso started and played the full 90 for Australia though the Matildas lost 1-0 to Sweden. They'll next play the Netherlands Friday at 7am PT.

Finally, the U.S. U-23s WNT played Japan in La Manga, Spain yesterday winning 2-0 with Thorns midfielder Celeste Boureille starting and contributing to the victory.
