Add another award to Portland Thorns FC midfielder Lindsey Horan’s resume – a list of accomplishments which, over the last 12 months, has become markedly more crowded.
After a 2018 National Women’s Soccer League Soccer season in which the 25-year-old won the league’s Most Valuable Player award – and coming less than a month after she helped the United States win their second consecutive World Cup – Horan has been honored as the 2019 Harry Glickman Female Professional Athlete of the Year.
The honor, given annually at the Oregon Sports Awards to “the outstanding … professional athlete with an Oregon background or on an Oregon team,” has been given to female athletes since 1991, with Thorns FC goalkeeper Adrianna Franch winning last year. Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard won the corresponding award of men this year, with Horan beating out Reign FC attacker Megan Rapinoe and track-and-field standout Shelby Houlihan for her honor.
The 2018 season, Horan’s fourth in Portland, saw the Golden, Colorado-born star reach a career high in goals scored (14) while matching her best mark in assists (three). In helping her team to a second-consecutive NWSL Championship Game, Horan became the first player to claim the league’s MVP award without winning the season’s Golden Boot.
Horan’s victory marks the fourth time a Portland Thorn has won the honor, following in the footsteps of Franch (2017), Tobin Heath (2016) and Alex Morgan (2013).
