MATCH RECAP | Austin FC 4, Portland Timbers 1

Timbers at Austin FC, 07.01.21

AUSTIN, Texas - First-half goals by midfielders Jon Gallagher and Diego Fagundez helped Austin FC to a 4-1 win over the Portland Timbers a Q2 Stadium on Thursday evening. As part of the first-half scoring, Timbers striker Jeremy Ebobisse scored in stoppage time, but Portland's bid at another comeback result was ended when Austin's Alex Ring scored late in the second half to continue Austin's highest scoring output of the campaign.

For Ebobisse, it was his second goal of the regular season and his second goal in his last three matches.

The match at Austin FC was the fourth match for the Timbers in 13 days, since returning to play from the recent international break on June 19. And for a fifth consecutive game, the Timbers allowed a goal in the opening half hour. Twice, however, the Timbers have been able to battle back to earn a result, but it wasn't to be in Austin.

Between injuries and international duty, Portland was without nine players for the midweek match at Austin FC.

Entering the match, Austin FC had scored just six goals this season.

28' - Austin FC - Gallagher scored the first goal at Q2 stadium. As part of the build-up, Gallagher sent the ball down the flank to Pochettino, who then crossed it back into the box. That's where Gallagher ran onto the ball and redirected it into the left side of the goal.

33' - Austin FC - High press by Austin FC forced a Timbers turnover at midfield. Two passes later, Fagundez was in on goal and slotted a shot by a diving Steve Clark for Austin FC's second goal in five minutes. Defender Julio Cascante and Cecilio Domínguez were credited with assists.

45+ - Portland Timbers - In first-half stoppage time, a build-up out of the back led to a goal by Ebobisse. Diego Valeri played the ball down the right side to Marvin Loría on a run. Loría crossed the ball across the top of the six yard box, finding Ebobisse on a near-post run. Ebobisse slotted it home to cut the deficit in half just before the break, scoring his second goal in three games.

77' - Austin FC - Domínguez delivered a free kick from the right side into the box. Ring worked his way back to the ball and was able to place a header into the top left side of the goal.

82' - Austin FC - Austin was able to win the ball back in Portland's defensive third. Quickly, the ball was fed to Hector Jimenez, who worked his way into the box. After a few touches to set himself up for a shot, he converted into the back of the net.
