MATCH RECAP | D.C. United 4, Portland Timbers 1

WASHINGTON – Timbers forward Samuel Armenteros scored in the first half but D.C. United countered with a brace from Wayne Rooney as the Red-and-Black defeated Portland 4-1 at Audi Field Wednesday evening.

Match Moments

20' - CLEARANCE (POR) - United, in a give-and-go attack down the right channel, saw Paul Arriola play the ball to his right for Wayne Rooney. Rooney's dangerous skipping cross into the mixer was calmly cleared away by midfielder Diego Chara.

21' - CHANCE (POR) - Down the other way, Sebastián Blanco weaved through the D.C. defense to the endline. His tight-angled shot was tipped just over the bar by United goalkeeper Bill Hamid. Julio Cascante's header off of Diego Valeri's ensuing corner skimmed just over the cross bar.

35' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers got out to a 1-0 lead as Blanco fought for the ball near the edge of the 18-yard box before sending it through to Andy Polo. Polo cut it back to Armenteros at the top of the six where the striker slotted the ball into the lower corner of the net for his eighth goal of the year.

43' - GOAL (D.C.) - United tied it at 1-1 when Yamil Asad weighted a ball to a timed run from Rooney. Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella came off his line but Rooney nicked the ball just past him.

47' - GOAL (D.C.) - United's Luciano Acosta carried into the Timbers defense before playing a ball out to Oniel Fisher on his right. Fisher hit the ball off the far post and in for a 2-1 United lead.

68' - GOAL (D.C.) - Rooney made it 3-1 for United when he curled a 20 yard free kick around the Timbers' wall and into the back of the net for his brace.

87' - SAVE (POR) - D.C.'s Zoltán Stieber snuck through the Portland defense to take a point-blank shot on frame only to have Attinella swat it down and cover.

90+1' - GOAL (D.C.) - United's Darren Mattocks made it 4-1 for the home side when he bested two defenders, went in 1-v-1 against Attinella, and beat him to the right side.
