MATCH RECAP | San Jose Earthquakes 0, Portland Timbers 2 | May 15, 2021

The Portland Timbers notched its first road win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night at PayPal Park. Making his MLS debut, goalkeeper Logan Ketterer saved a penalty kick and delivered Portland's first clean sheet of the season.


Yimmi Chara and Marvin Loría scored the goals in the victory while Eryk Williamson notched two assists.

5' — GOAL (POR) — The Timbers took an early lead when Yimmi Chara notched his fifth career MLS goal. Chara provided a tidy finish chipping the ball over an on-rushing JT Marcinkowski. Eryk Williamson set up the goal by streaking through the defense before playing a pass to Chara, who took a touch before his left-footed goal. 

30' — POST (POR) — Defender Dario Zuparic was denied Portland's second when his header ricocheted off the outside of the post. Zuparic's header came directly from a whipped-in corner kick from Marvin Loría.


45+2' — SHOT (POR) — Moments before halftime, Williamson stole the ball from San Jose in Portland's defensive half. Williamson then took 17 touches on his way around multiple Earthquake players before firing a shot that was saved by Marcinkowski. 



55' — SHOT (POR) — After a deflected pass, Felipe Mora found the ball six yards from the goal but his shot was saved out for a corner.


61' — PENALTY KICK SAVE (POR) — In his MLS debut, Logan Ketterer stopped Chris Wondolowski's penalty kick when he dove to his left and denied the MLS's All-time leading goalscorer. 

74' â€” GOAL (POR) — Portland doubled its lead when Loría finished a short-range header off a pinpoint cross from Williamson. The goal was Loría's first in MLS since the 2019 season while the pass gave Williamson the first two-assist performance of his career. 

80' â€” SAVE (POR) — Ketterer again stopped Wondolowski when he made a last-gasp save with his left hand to deny the bouncing headed shot. 


Notes

  • In nine matches managed against the Earthquakes since joining Portland in 2018, Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese holds a 7-1-1 record.
  • The Timbers have scored 19 goals at San Jose in MLS play, which is tied for the most goals scored by Portland at any single opponent (Real Salt Lake, LA Galaxy).
  • In his MLS and Timbers debut, goalkeeper Logan Ketterer tallied a shutout and made four saves, including a penalty-kick save on San Jose forward Chris Wondolowski in the 62nd minute.
