Portland Timbers release free custom, web-based video game, 'Set Piece'

Set Piece with phones, 6.15.16

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers today announced the launch of a free, custom web-based video game, “Set Piece.” Inspired by the Timbers Army’s iconic “Tetris” chant, “Set Piece” is the first team-developed, web-based video game in Major League Soccer, and can be accessed and played at www.setpiece.com.

Working with local Portland agency Instrument, “Set Piece” features seven Timbers-centric illustrated game pieces, each representing a traditional aspect of the club or the sport. They include a scarf, chainsaw, hand saw, roses, the Victory Log, soccer ball and an axe, as well as a custom, Timbers-themed musical score that plays during the game.

“Set Piece” works to embody the energy inside Providence Park within the game by incorporating authentic moments during a match, including supporter chants and sounds during match play. In addition, different Oregon-themed backgrounds change as the player clears each level, depicting Providence Park, Haystack Rock, St. John’s Bridge, Crater Lake and Mt. Hood.

The goal of the game is to “set the pieces” together in one contiguous line to accumulate points. After 10 lines are removed, players will reach a new level, with each level increasing in difficulty. A leaderboard tracking the top 100 scores appears following the completion of each session.

The game is optimized for desktop, tablet and mobile devices, and the current release can be played on all browsers.
