Y. Chara departs Portland after four seasons

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers and Yimmi Chara have mutually agreed on the winger’s transfer to Colombian side Junior FC, both teams announced today. Y. Chara departs the club after a four-year career with Portland.

“We would like to thank Yimmi for his contributions and commitment to the club over the past four seasons. He has been a true professional during his time in Portland,” said Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy. “We wish him all the best with the opportunity to return to a club he has a history with and reuniting with his family.”

Y. Chara, 32, joined the Timbers in 2020 as a Designated Player and registered 102 regular season appearances (83 starts) in his four seasons with the Timbers. The Colombian international made his MLS debut on March 1, 2020, and went on to register 15 goals and 29 assists through 2023, helping Portland earn the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament and the 2021 Western Conference Championship. Notably, Y. Chara was one of two players to play in every match of Portland’s 2022 season with 34 appearances (33 starts).

Y. Chara returns to Colombia’s top-flight after making his professional debut with Deportes Tolima in 2010. The winger also had stints with Mexican side CF Monterrey (2015-17), Junior FC (2017-18) and Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro (2018-19). Playing with Junior FC, Y. Chara won the 2017 Colombian Cup. Internationally, Y. Chara has made 16 appearances for the Colombian Men’s National Team, tallying one goal and two assists.
