RECAP | Portland Timbers lose 3-2 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC

PORTLAND, Ore. – First half goals from Yimmi Chara and Dairon Asprilla were offset by three second half tallies from the visitors as the Portland Timbers lost 3-2 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC Wednesday night at Providence Park.

Match Moments

9' - CHANCE (POR) - On a Portland corner kick from Yimmi Chara, Felipe Mora spun and took a shot on goal that Vancouver goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau saved. Midfielder Sebastián Blanco collected the rebound and tried to chip the 'keeper but his shot pinged off the crossbar and away.

15' - GOAL (POR) - Portland took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. A chipped in ball was pushed back out by Crépeau but midfielder Cristhian Paredes calmly collected, settled the ball, and squared it to Chara near the penalty spot. Chara wound up and slotted the ball into the lower corner of the net.

27' - CHANCE (POR) - Dairon Asprilla, left with space outside the area, teed up a skipping shot that Crépeau palmed away with one hand. On the ensuing corner, Paredes' free header went just over the bar.

42' - GOAL (POR) - Paredes led an attack forward into the Whitecaps end. His slicing pass for Chara was broken up by a Vancouver defender but Chara managed to poke the ball free to an onrushing Asprilla who fired his shot into the top netting for a 2-0 Portland lead just before the half.

63' - GOAL (VAN) - Vancouver's Déiber Caicedo recovered a Portland free kick in his own end, sprinted upfield with the ball and scored to cut Portland's lead in half and make the score 2-1.

74' - CHANCE (POR) - Chara sent an outswinging corner kick into the box that Asprilla headed narrowly over the bar.

76' - GOAL (VAN) - A ball that looked like it was going out of bounds was recovered by Whitecaps defender Bruno Gaspar on the Timbers endline. His chipped cross connected with Vancouver forward Brian White on the back post to head in and make it 2-2.

82' - PK GOAL (VAN) - After a foul in the box was called on Portland defender Josecarlos Van Rankin, Whitecaps forward Cristian Dájome stepped to the spot and converted his penalty attempt to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

90+5' - CHANCE (POR) - Diego Valeri brought down a ball on the near post, took a touch, and fired a shot that flashed across goal and wide of the right post.

The Portland Timbers have a quick turnaround as they will travel Saturday to the Rocky Mountain State to play the Colorado Rapids (6pm PT, FOX 12 PLUS).
