Statement from Merritt Paulson on Thorns FC roster moves

Sellout crowd, Thorns vs. Reign, 7.22.15

We indicated the Thorns offseason would be eventful, and today will demonstrate we are off to a fast start.  While I am not going to comment on any specific moves, I do want to make three points to our supporters.

First and foremost, the Thorns are not rebuilding. We are fortunate to have a lot of terrific players and people on our roster.  In some cases, our plans going forward are best served by making difficult decisions to part ways with some of these players in an effort to construct the best possible squad poised for success in 2016 and beyond. Reasons for the moves are different in each case, but regardless of rationale we have conviction that each step leads toward another Thorns trophy. We have a very clear blueprint and are putting in a lot of effort to make that plan a reality.

Second, I want to thank each player who is leaving our team. We have been blessed with some terrific professionals on and off the pitch. We wish all those not returning the very best in the future.

Third, you might need a bit of patience this offseason to understand every roster decision. We have targeted several world class players. Those deals can take time. We are also bullish on a couple top college players entering the NWSL through the draft who can make an impact out of the gate.

Looking forward to an amazing 2016 Thorns season!

Regards,

Merritt
