PORTLAND, Ore. – T2 announced today that the club has acquired winger Marvin Loría from Costa Rican Primera División side Deportivo Saprissa on loan for the 2018 USL campaign, with a purchase option. Loría will be added to T2’s roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa, in addition to league and federation approval.
A native of San Jose, Costa Rica, Loría, 20, joins Portland from Deportivo Saprissa (2013-15, 2016-18), where he spent four seasons, appearing in 10 matches (6 starts) and registering one assist. Loría made his professional debut with Saprissa as a 16-year-old, starting alongside current Portland Timbers midfielder David Guzmán in a 1-1 draw against C.S. Cartaginés on Nov. 24, 2013. Loría was part of the Saprissa side that won the 2016-17 Invierno, 2014-15 Torneo de Invierno, the 2013-14 Torneo de Verano and the 2013 Copa Costa Rica.
“Marvin provides us another quality attacking option as we look to complete our USL roster for the upcoming season,” said Nick Mansueto, assistant general manager for the Timbers. “He is a younger player from the region, and we have been monitoring his development over the past year. Marvin will have the opportunity to continue his development in our system as a creative player that can play multiple positions, bringing our roster flexibility and choices in the attack.”
Loría joined Portuguese club Benfica B on loan from Saprissa in August 2015, where he made one appearance, coming on as a substitute in a 2-0 win over Galatasaray S.K. in the UEFA Youth League on Nov. 3, 2015.
At the international level, Loría has made several appearances for Costa Rica at the youth level, including making three appearances (1 start) at the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Costa Rica.
Transaction: T2 acquire winger Marvin Loría on loan from Deportivo Saprissa on March 9, 2018.
