In the W-League’s 2017 opener, Thorns FC's Hayley Raso, Celeste Boureille and Brisbane Roar FC rose to defeat Emily Sonnett and Sydney FC by a final score of 3-1. Raso and Boureille each made starts for the Roar with Raso going the distance and Boureille taking a pair of shots in her 90 minutes of play, before coming off as a second-half stoppage-time substitution. Sonnett came on at half for the Sky Blues and scored her side’s lone goal on a PK conversion in the 80th minute.

“It was an honor to even get on the field having just arrived a few days ago,” said Sonnett after the game. “My mentality was to do the most I can for the team. “I was happy to step up for the penalty, I’ve done it in the past and felt comfortable and I’m just lucky I was able to be in that position.”
On Friday night, Ashleigh Sykes and Canberra United suffered a 2-1 defeat to Melbourne Victory in their first match of the W-League season. Sykes made the start for Canberra and went the distance in the match for her club side.
In her first career W-League appearance, goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom helped lead the Newcastle Jets to a 2-1 win over the Western Sydney Wanderers, Saturday evening. Eckerstrom got the start in goal, going the distance in the match and making two saves en route to her first win of the season.
