Thorns FC select five players in NWSL Supplemental Draft

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC today selected defenders Tina Ellertson and Marian Dalmy, midfielder Angie Kerr and forwards Michele Weissenhofer and Jessica Shufelt in the National Women’s Soccer League Supplemental Draft. 

Thorns FC selected Northwest native Ellertson with the eighth overall pick. In the following rounds, the club selected University of Portland standout midfielder Kerr in the second round (16th overall), former Women’s U-23 National Team forward Weissenhofer in the third round (24th overall), 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup veteran defender Dalmy in the fourth round (32nd overall) and former University of Connecticut forward Shufelt in the fifth round (40th overall). Portland elected to pass in the final round.

Ellertson, 30, made 34 appearances for the U.S. Women’s National Team from 2005-08, including two appearances during the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China. The Vancouver, Wash., native and Hudson’s Bay High School alum also brings experience at the professional level, earning a WPS All-Star selection in 2009 with St. Louis Athletica. Ellertson also played professionally for the Atlanta Beat (2010) and magicJack (2011) in WPS.

A two-time Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year selection as a forward at the University of Washington, Ellertson finished her collegiate career (2001-04) as the program’s all-time leader in goals (43) and points (99).

Kerr, 27, made 10 appearances for the U.S. Women’s National Team from 2005-09. A three-time All-American at the University of Portland, Kerr gained extensive playing time with the Women’s U-19 National Team during the 2002 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championships, lining up alongside Thorns FC defender Rachel Buehler.

A native of El Cajon, Calif., Kerr helped the University of Portland (2003-07) win the 2005 NCAA Championship with Thorns FC teammate Christine Sinclair, scoring a goal and adding two assists in the title game. Professionally, Kerr was selected as the 13th overall pick in the 2009 WPS Draft by St. Louis Athletica. She also played for the Atlanta Beat (2010) and Sky Blue FC (2011), respectively. 

Weissenhofer, 25, scored five goals in 12 appearances helping the Chicago Red Stars reach the Women’s Professional Soccer League Elite (WPSL Elite) championship match in 2012. The University of Notre Dame (2006-09) forward and program record holder in career postseason game-winning goals (7), was selected as the 33rd overall pick by Chicago in the 2010 WPS Draft. 

As a member of the Women’s U-21 National Team, Weissenhofer helped the squad capture the championship of the 2007 Nordic Cup alongside Buehler and Kerr, scoring a goal in the final match. Weissenhofer also was a part of the Women’s U-23 National Team at the 2008 La Manga Tournament in Spain. A native of Naperville, Ill., Weissenhofer played professionally in Germany’s Frauen Bundesliga from June 2010 to March 2011, scoring six goals in 23 appearances in all competitions for SG Essen-Schönebeck.

Dalmy, 28, made two appearances for the U.S Women’s National Team during the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China and has earned 11 caps overall at the senior international level. The Colorado native played two seasons in WPS for the Chicago Red Stars (2009, 2010) and one for magicJack (2011). 

A four-year starter at Santa Clara University (2003-06), Dalmy was named the 2006 West Coast Conference (WCC) Player of the Year after leading all WCC defenders with six goals, six assists and 18 points in her senior season.

Shufelt, 22, completed a four-year career at UConn in 2011, finishing with 11 goals and 10 assists in 72 games for the Huskies. A native of Rochester, N.Y., Shufelt made 12 appearances for the Ottawa Fury of the USL W-League during the summer of 2012, registering one goal and two assists as the Fury won the championship. Shufelt also played for Ottawa in 2011, scoring nine goals in 11 games.
