PORTLAND, Ore.— At a special event on the Concordia University campus this afternoon, Portland Timbers President Merritt Paulson presented a check for $20,000 to University representatives on behalf of the club, a contribution toward the new Concordia University & Community Athletic Complex.
Portland City Commissioner Nick Fish and Timbers Chief Operating Officer Mike Golub were also on hand to present the grant, which was received by Concordia student-athletes, University officials and Northeast United/Alameda Soccer Club youth athletes.
“Our mandate of community outreach is one of the cornerstones of our mission,” said Paulson. “We love to give back to the community.”
In conjunction with the City of Portland and Portland Parks & Recreation, the Timbers made the donation as part of the club’s field grant program, through which the club contributes $50,000 annually to support community field development and youth programming in the Portland area.
“This Timbers field grant is a substantial boost to the construction of the complex and for youth athletic programs that will benefit all of Northeast Portland,” said Concordia Executive Vice President Gary Withers.
The estimated $7.5 million complex, which will also be available for use by Northeast United/Alameda Soccer Club, will provide a home for Concordia’s men’s and women’s soccer teams, as well as the University’s baseball team, all of which previously had to travel to remote sites to play home games.
Originally started in February, construction is scheduled to be completed in the fall.
