The Portland Timbers announced today the signing of forward
David Hague
, the NCAA’s leading scorer in 2006. Hague scored 33 goals and tallied seven assists for 72 points in 19 matches for Grand Canyon University (GCU) last season, recording one of the top offensive performances in NCAA history.
“David is a player who had a lot of success at the collegiate level,” said
Gavin Wilkinson
, Timbers head coach and general manager. “He is a very direct, left-footed player who has all the tools to succeed at this level and put the ball in the back of the net. Hopefully, he is another Alan Gordon in the making.”
Hague, a native of Jarrow, England, led GCU to a 14-6-0 record and a first-place finish in the Pacific West Conference (NCAA Division II) his senior year. His offensive explosion in 2006 set numerous GCU school records, including most points in a season (72) and most hat tricks in a season (5). Hague also set the Antelopes record for most goals scored in a single game with five tallies against Chaminade University on Oct. 14, 2006. His 33 goals in one season is the eighth-best performance in NCAA Division II men’s soccer history.
Hague, a midfielder for GCU, was a Daktronics All-American and was the leading vote-getter at the midfield position. Among his many accolades his senior season, Hague was also selected to the All-Far West Region first team.
In 2005, his first season at GCU, Hague recorded five goals and three assists for 13 points. Hague played for Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, before joining GCU in 2005.
The signing of Hague brings the Timbers’ list of roster players to 14.
Portland kicks off its seventh USL First Division season at PGE Park on Saturday, April 21, against the Puerto Rico Islanders at 7 p.m. A variety of season ticket options are available by calling the Timbers ticket office at (503) 553-5555.
