Timbers U-23s’ Zach Barnes, David Meves earn PDL All-Western Conference honors

U-23s Zach Barnes David Meves Split 2013

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Timbers U-23s midfielder Zach Barnes and goalkeeper David Meves were named to the Premier Development League (PDL) All-Western Conference Team, it was announced today by United Soccer Leagues. The PDL’s all-conference teams were selected through a vote by team management.

In 2013, Barnes and Meves helped lead the Timbers U-23s to a second-place finish in the Western Conference’s Northwest Division during the regular season and reach the conference final for the second time in the team’s history.

Barnes, 21, played every minute of the 2013 season for the Timbers U-23s, and his 1,260 minutes played over 14 regular-season matches tied for first among PDL players. In total, Barnes logged 1,590 minutes played between league play and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches, recording 450 more minutes than any other field player on the Timbers U-23s roster. From Flower Mound, Texas, Barnes tallied the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in a 1-0 victory against the Pumas on June 21, resulting in an honorable mention nod on the PDL Team of the Week.

Meves, 23, finished the regular season tied for third in the PDL with six shutouts and ranked among league leaders in both goals-against average (0.85) and fewest goals allowed (11). The Arlington Heights, Ill., native helped anchor a Timbers U-23s defense that allowed the fewest goals in the Northwest Division, and finished the regular season with a 6-3-4 record and 40 saves. Meves was also named to the PDL Team of the Week for the fifth week of the season after posting back-to-back shutouts May 31 against North Sound SeaWolves FC and June 1 against the Kitsap Pumas.

The All-Western Conference Team featured eight players from the Northwest Division. Along with Barnes and Meves, players from Sounders FC U-23, Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 and Victoria Highlanders FC also received all-conference honors.
