PORTLAND, Ore.
- The Portland Timbers re-signed forward Fadi Afash for the rest of the 2004 season, it was announced Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"With the roster freeze deadline upon us, we felt it was important to add a little more depth and experience up front,” said Timbers general manager Jim Taylor. “Fadi gives us that and more. I expect him to make a positive and immediate impact on and off the pitch. That's what he's been brought in here to do."
After being released by the Timbers in the preseason, Afash went on to play for the Utah Blitzz of the Pro Soccer League, spreading six goals over 14 games.
Afash and the Timbers reunited on June 30 when the Timbers defeated the Blitzz 2-1 in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. Afash tallied a goal against his former teammates and nearly scored another earlier in the match.
Afash, 30, spent the 2002-03 campaigns with Portland, scoring 48 points on 22 goals and four assists over the two seasons. He collected 18 goals in 2002, sharing the A-League goal-scoring title with teammate McKinley Tennyson and Montreal’s Eduardo Sebrango.
Afash is currently traveling with the team and is eligible to play in Wednesday’s match at Calgary.
Timbers welcome back Afash
