Timbers will host San Jose of MLS with a win over Seattle in U.S. Open Cup play

PORTLAND, Ore.
- Should the Timbers defeat the Seattle Sounders in their third round U.S. Open Cup match on July 12, Portland will play host to Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes at PGE Park on Wednesday, Aug. 3, U.S. Soccer has announced.




The potential USL First Division-MLS showdown would give the Timbers a chance to avenge last year’s 3-0 loss the Earthquakes at PGE Park in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.




More than 10,000 fans turned out to watch the fourth-round event in 2004.




To make the match a reality, the Timbers need to vanquish their archrivals, the Seattle Sounders, in the third round of the Cup. The contest takes place on Tuesday, July 12, at PGE Park, beginning at 7 p.m.




Tickets for the Seattle match are available at area Ticketmaster outlets and at the PGE Park box office.




Ticket prices and information for the potential fourth-round match with San Jose will be released at a later date.




ABOUT THE LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP


The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation’s national championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.




At stake in the in-season tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team that advances deepest in the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.




Within the U.S. Open Cup framework, teams compete in one of the following four categories: professional outdoor Division I (Major League Soccer), Division II (USL D1) or Division III (USL D2); or Amateur Division (USL Premier Development League & U.S. Adult Soccer Association).
