Thorns FC forwardNadia Nadim and the Danish National Women's Team finished as runners up in the 2017 UEFA Women’s EURO Sunday, as the tournament-host Netherlands secured a 4-2 finals victory in front of 28,182 fans in Enschede. Nadim scored the opening goal in the match with a 6th minute penalty kick, her second goal of the EUROs.
The match featured an undefeated Dutch team and a Danish team whose only tournament loss came in a group-stage match versus their finals opponent. The second-place finish marks Denmark's best-ever showing at the Women's EURO.
Nadia Nadim opened Sunday’s game with a 6th minute goal from the penalty spot. Nadim buried the ball past a diving Sari van Veenendaal to put the Danes up early 1-0. However, the lead was short-lived.
Four minutes later Shanice van de Sanden pushed a ball across the top of the six-yard box, where Vivianne Miedema converted on one touch.
The Netherlands took the lead in the 28th minute before Denmark’s Pernille Harder tied up the game at with an across-body shot to the near corner in 33rd.
The score remained two all through the end of the first half, but the Netherlands took control of the game after halftime, scoring six minutes after the break. Miedema scored the clincher in the 89th minute, securing the Netherlands’ first major international championship title. With the win, the Netherlands have become only the fourth team to win the Women’s EURO, and the first to do so as the host since Germany in 2001.
Silver-medalist Nadim will now rejoin the Thorns. Portland next match will be against the Chicago Red Stars at Toyota Park on Saturday (5pm PT, go90).
