U.S. OPEN CUP MATCH RECAP | Seattle Sounders FC 1, Portland Timbers 2

TACOMA, Wash. – Two goals from striker Brian Fernandez – one in each half – gave the Portland Timbers a 2-1 victory over Seattle Sounders FC in the fourth round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Cheney Stadium. They now advance to the Round of 16 in the tournament with U.S. Soccer holding a draw on Thursday, June 13 at 7am PT to determine Portland's next opponent and date.

Match Moments

6' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers jumped out to an early lead when Sebastián Blanco slipped a ball forward to Brian Fernandez in the right channel. Fernandez cut inside to his left and then rifled a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the Seattle net for a 1-0 lead.

24' - SAVE (POR) - Portland goalkeeper Steve Clark was tested as a throughball found Sounders defender Nouhou Tolo on the left wing. His angled shot was pushed away. A minute later, on a Seattle throw-in to Víctor Rodríguez, Clark dove to his left to parry away another close-in Seattle shot.

44' - GOAL (SEA) - The Sounders evened the game at 1-1 when Rodríguez hit a free kick from 20-yards out that deflected off the Portland wall and into the net.

45+2' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland's Jorge Moreira lofted a ball from the right sideline that drifted on frame forcing Sounders goalkeeper Bryan Meredith to leap high, get a hand to it, and knock it off the crossbar and away.

48' - CHANCE (POR) - Shortly after halftime, Blanco found himself with space and hit a dipping shot from 30 yards out that was knocked down by Meredith. Fernandez pounced on the rebound but sent his shot just wide of the left post.

50' - GOAL (POR) - Fernandez earned his brace on a terrific team goal in the 50th minute. Beginning deep in their own end, Blanco pinged a ball upfield to Diego Valeri who then hit it to Jeremy Ebobisse in stride on the left side. Ebobisse raced to the endline and then skipped a perfect cross into the mixer for the onrushing Fernandez to one-time into the back of the net, giving Portland a 2-1 lead.

61' - SAVE (POR) - Sounders midfielder Harrison Shipp took a hard shot that Clark was in good position to knock down and cover.

71' - CHANCE (POR) - Fernandez nearly had a hat trick when he combined with Valeri for a give-and-go on the edge of the Seattle 18-yard box. Fernandez' near-post shot was parried away by a diving Meredith.

79' - PK MISS (SEA) - Following a hand ball in the box call against the Timbers, Seattle's Rodriguez hit his penalty kick hard and off the crossbar.

83' - CHANCE (POR) - Ebobisse had a chance coming in from the left but his shot skittered just wide of the far post.

88' - SAVE (POR) - Clark, who had seven saves in the match, came up big late when Seattle's Henry Wingo sliced through the defense and took a point blank shot that the Portland shot-stopper sprung to his left to parry away with one hand.

The Timbers next match in the Round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup will be determined on Thursday, June 13 via a regional draw from U.S. Soccer. Portland returns to MLS play on June 22 when they host the Houston Dynamo at Providence Park (8pm PT, ROOT SPORTS).
