TUKWILA, Wash. – T2 saw their run in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament come to an end in a hard-fought, 2-1 loss in extra time to Seattle Sounders FC 2 in a third-round match on Wednesday afternoon in front of 1,737 fans at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.
T2 registered the go-ahead goal in the 54th minute as defender Rennico Clark delivered a strong header off a corner kick from midfielder Blair Gavin. Playing at home for the second straight U.S. Open Cup match, Seattle tied the score in the 65th minute as forward Andy Craven got onto the end of a through pass from Victor Mansaray for a breakaway opportunity and beat T2 goalkeeper Justin Luthy with a low shot. The match finished tied through regulation, despite some close chances for both sides. Luthy made 14 saves in the match, including a number of point-blank stops.
Sounders FC 2 took the lead in the 104th minute of extra time as midfielder Sam Garza played forward Pablo Rossi into the penalty box and the forward slotted a shot across the face of goal and inside the far post.
T2 saw several close chances to tie the match in the final minutes of extra time, including a header by defender Harrison Delbridge in the 115th minute from a corner kick, but the ball passed just wide of the post. Forward Kharlton Belmar also had a chance to equalize in the 117th minute, but his header was saved. Portland earned a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
T2 return to USL league play and begin a three-game road swing, traveling to face Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Saturday, May 30, at ONEOK Field; kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (Pacific).
