The Timbers will travel to face Real Salt Lake in a 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 match on Wednesday, July 1, at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah; kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Pacific).
The Timbers advanced to the Round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup after defeating Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC 3-1 after extra time on Tuesday at Starfire Stadium. Midfielder Rodney Wallace tallied the game-winning goal in the 100th minute and forward Maximiliano Urruti and midfielder Diego Valeri also netted goals in a wild rivalry match that saw Sounders FC finish with seven players after three red cards and an injury.
Real Salt Lake defeated USL side Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Tuesday at Rio Tinto Stadium. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, forward Joao Plata and midfielder Javier Morales each tallied goals in the second half to lead Real Salt Lake to the 2-1 victory.
The match on July 1 will mark the second-ever meeting between the Timbers and Real Salt Lake in U.S. Open Cup play. The two clubs previously met in the semifinals of the 2013 tournament with Real Salt Lake taking a 2-1 win on Aug. 7, 2013, at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Round of 16 match will be Portland’s second straight road game during the 2015 competition.
