PORTLAND, Ore.
- It was an electric Sunday at PGE Park as Portland played host to Group D play of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2003. An inspired Ghana team-led by two goals from Alberta Sackey-defeated Australia, 2-1, and both China and Russia advanced to quarterfinal play after a 1-0 victory by the Chinese team.
An impressive crowd of more than 19,000 strong invaded the stadium to further support the billing of Portland as "Soccer City USA."
World Cup play continues at PGE Park Thursday as Germany faces Russia at 4:30 p.m. Pacific and China faces Canada at 7:30 p.m.
