Timbers defender Finn Surman scored his first World Cup goal, helping New Zealand to a strong start vs. Egypt in Group G play at BC Place.
Vancouver, B.C. – Portland Timbers defender Finn Surman delivered an unforgettable moment for New Zealand, scoring the opening goal in the 15th minute. But it wasn’t to be as the All Whites fell, 3-1, to Egypt in Group G play of FIFA World Cup 2026™️ on Sunday night at BC Place.
Surman’s goal was the highlight of a strong opening half for New Zealand. The 22-year-old center back was left unmarked on a corner kick by Tim Payne, and Surman delivered his first World Cup goal. The milestone moment helped the All Whites to their first halftime lead in a World Cup match, leading, 1-0.
It was Surman's third international goal in his 21st appearance for New Zealand.
Facing an Egypt side led by international stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, New Zealand was forced to withstand extended stretches of pressure, particularly in the second half. Still, Surman’s presence was felt. He won three aerial duels, was credited with multiple blocks and finished the match with a team best 97.7% pass completion (42 completed passes).
New Zealand concludes Group G play against Belgium on Friday, June 26, at BC Place; kickoff is 8 p.m. (Pacific). To advance, the All Whites will need all three points and likely some help from other results.
