USWNT vs. Mexico 10.24.14

In dominating fashion behind a brace from Carli Lloyd, the United States Women’s National Team became the 19th team to qualify for 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Friday night with a 3-0 victory over Mexico at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.

Thorns FC midfielder Tobin Heath made her third consecutive start for the United States, playing all 90 minutes, and tallied her first assist of the tournament on the opening goal of the match with a perfectly placed cross into the box for Lloyd to head home in the sixth minute.

On the second goal it was Heath who drew the penalty kick and Lloyd converted from the spot in the 30th minute, while Christen Press made a perfectly timed run to get on the end of a Sydney Leroux through ball in the box for the third, and final, goal of the game in the 56th minute.

With the win, the United States advances to the championship match of the tournament and will take on Costa Rica on Sunday, Oct. 26th, at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. Sunday’s match on FOX Sports 1 kicks off at 3 p.m. (Pacific).

The official draw for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place on Dec. 6 in Ottawa, Ontario as 24 finalists will be drawn into six groups.
