PORTLAND, Ore.
- Portland Timbers rookie forward Byron Alvarez was recognized as one of the top offensive producers in the league Thursday with his naming to the A-League 2003 All-League Second Team.
Alvarez' quick feet and-high energy brand of play resulted in a team-leading 12 goals in just 21 games played this season. Alvarez also finished eighth in the league in scoring with 25 points and fourth overall in goals scored.
A five-time member of the league's Team of the Week in 2003, Alvarez was named the A-League Player of the Week for Week 12. The nod came in response to a hat trick performance July 3 vs. Vancouver, in which Alvarez scored three goals in a 20-minute span off the bench.
The only Timber to be named All-League in 2003, Alvarez continues the tradition of strong forward play in Portland, as strikers McKinley Tennyson and Fadi Afash garnered All-League status in 2002.
The 2003 All-League Teams include 22 players from 11 of the 19 teams and are voted on by the clubs' coaches and general managers.
Alvarez is one of two rookies selected All-League, along with midfielder David Testo of the Richmond Kickers.
