PORTLAND, Ore.
- With less than one week remaining until the Timbers take on the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer, Portland added a MLS player of its own, receiving defender Scot Thompson on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy for the remainder of the season, it was announced Wednesday.
“He is a very good defender, outstanding in one-on-one situations and excellent in the air,” said head coach Bobby Howe. “He’ll add another dimension to our defense.”
Thompson, 23, has appeared in one game for the Galaxy this season, logging one minute of play in the campaign. Drafted by Los Angeles in the second round (16th overall) of the 2003 MLS SuperDraft, Thompson tore the ACL in his left knee during the 2003 preseason and did not play in his rookie season as a result.
A college standout, Thompson was co-captain of the UCLA team that won the 2002 NCAA Championship and was named second team All-Far West and first team All-Pac 10 during that season while starting all 22 games for the Bruins.
Thompson will be eligible for tonight’s match against the Edmonton Aviators at PGE Park. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
