PORTLAND, Ore.
– The Portland Timbers today announced that Gavin Wilkinson has been named the team’s primary assistant coach.
Wilkinson, 32, was a member of the inaugural 2001 Timbers USL squad and has played in each of the team’s five seasons. He ranks second among the franchise’s career leaders in games (116), minutes (9,898) and fouls (162). One of three Timbers to play in each of the team’s five USL seasons, Wilkinson was also capped as a member of the New Zealand National Team on 38 occasions, including during the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup in France.
Wilkinson holds a USSF “A” coaching license, is the director of coaching at EastSide United FC and served as a player-coach for the Timbers last season.
Wilkinson will assist with training and serve as the team’s summer soccer camp director. Additionally, he will assist in establishing an ambitious five-year youth- and player-development plan for the franchise.
“Gavin creates a nice link between last year’s squad and what we are doing this year,” said Chris Agnello, head coach and general manager of the Timbers. “His ambition, energy and passion for the game will be a valuable asset to the Timbers and to the soccer community.”
Prior to joining the Timbers, Wilkinson played club soccer in Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and Portugal.
Portland kicks off its sixth USL First Division season on Saturday, April 22, against the Vancouver Whitecaps at Swangard Stadium. The Timbers open the home portion of their season by playing host to the Whitecaps at PGE Park on Friday, May 5. A variety of season ticket options are available by calling the Timbers ticket office at (503) 553-5555. For detailed ticket information, go to www.portlandtimbers.com.
