Timbers re-sign Marcum, add Iniguez to mix for 2006

PORTLAND, Ore.
- The Portland Timbers today signed defender Garrett Marcum and midfielder Sergio Iñiguez to one-year contracts.

Marcum, 26, returns to the Timbers for a third season. Last year, Marcum made 12 appearances for the Timbers and logged more than 1,000 minutes on the field, despite not making his first appearance with the team until July. A four-year starter at the University of Portland prior to joining the Timbers, Marcum also serves as a coach with the Lake Oswego Soccer Club.

Iñiguez, 26, joins the Timbers after spending last season with the Atlanta Silverbacks, also of the United Soccer Leagues First Division. Iñiguez made 15 appearances and scored a goal for the Silverbacks during the 2005 season.

Prior to joining Atlanta, Iñiguez played for Farapai Community College and Glendale Community College, earning All-America honors at both schools. Iñiguez also spent time as a trialist with French clubs Lille and Auxerre as well as the Argentinean team Boca Juniors before signing with Atlanta.

“Garrett and Sergio are very good additions to our roster,” said Chris Agnello, head coach and general manager of the Timbers. “Sergio adds versatility to the team because his play allows us to use a number of different looks. Garrett will provide us veteran experience and crucial depth in defense.”

The announcement brings the Timbers’ list of signed players to 21.

Portland kicks off its sixth USL First Division season this Saturday, April 22, against the Vancouver Whitecaps at 7 p.m. at Swangard Stadium.
