First Division All-Stars play Sheffield Wednesday to scoreless draw

CARY, N.C.
- The USL First Division All-Star Game in Cary, N.C., versus English Coca Cola Championship League side Sheffield Wednesday finished in a scoreless draw Wednesday night.

The first of three great scoring opportunities in the match came in the 36th minute of action when Deon Burton was served a cross into the center of the six yard box only to see his touch send the ball surprisingly just over the bar.

Each side had a chance late in the game for the winner.

Scot Thompson of the Portland Timbers was selected to play in the game but did not participate.

The USL First Division All-Stars nearly took the lead in the 83rd minute when a counter up the middle through 1994 Brazilian World Cup champion Zinho (Miami FC) was directly perfectly into the path of a streaking Jason McLaughlin from the Atlanta Silverbacks. McLaughlin picked the ball up five yards outside the box with his defender beat and sent a shot directed to the upper corner of the far post only to see goalkeeper Chris Adamson knock hit it out of danger.

Sheffield Wednesday closed the game with an exciting breakaway of the their own when second half substitute Steven McLean got well behind the offside trap of the USL First Division All-Stars to create a one-on-one with Virginia Beach Mariners goalkeeper Matt Nelson. Nelson met McLean at the top of the penalty area to make a sliding stop on a low shot to the left that the Wednesday striker tried to slip under him to save register the draw.
