The Portland Timbers announced today the signing of all-league midfielder and Beaverton, Ore. native,
Andrew Gregor
, to a two-year contract.
Gregor, a standout at the University of Portland, joins the Timbers for the second time in his career, previously playing for the club during the 2004 season. Winning a championship in 2005, Gregor played for the Seattle Sounders the last two years.
“I’m excited about having a veteran like Andrew on our team,” said Timbers head coach and general manager
Gavin Wilkinson
. “An all-league midfielder last year, he’s done exceptionally well and gives us championship experience.
“Andrew adds leadership and a winning mentality to our team, but I expect him to be a calming influence and a motivator when needed.”
Gregor, drafted by the Columbus Crew in the 1998 Major League Soccer Draft, scored five goals and notched a team-high five assists for the Sounders in 2006, earning a spot on the USL First Division All-League first team for the third time in his career; he was previously selected in 2002 and 2003. In 2005, Gregor helped Seattle capture the USL First Division championship.
With the Timbers in 2004, Gregor, 31, played in 13 matches, scored two goals and recorded two assists. He helped the team assemble an 18-7-3 record, winning the USL First Division regular-season title. Gregor was a member of the 2004 Timbers squad that set club records for most wins (18) and most goals scored (57) in a season.
Gregor was a four-year starter and an All-West Coast Conference (WCC) selection at the University of Portland (1994-1997). Earning the WCC’s Freshman of the Year award in 1994, Gregor led the Pilots in assists his freshman and sophomore seasons. In 1997, Gregor captained the bronze medal-winning team at the World University Games and was also a member of the U-18 and U-20 U.S. National Teams from 1992-1995.
He played prep soccer at Sunset High School in Beaverton and was a two-time all-state selection. In 1993, Gregor was Oregon’s 4A Co-Player of the Year.
The announcement brings the Timbers’ list of signed roster players to 13.
Portland kicks off its seventh USL First Division season at PGE Park on Saturday, April 21, against the Puerto Rico Islanders. A variety of season ticket options are available by calling the Timbers ticket office at (503) 553-5555.
