Timbers round out coaching staff

PORTLAND, Ore.
– The Portland Timbers today announced the additions of Cony Konstin and John Galas to the coaching staff.

Konstin joins the Timbers from the WestSide Metros, where he has served as the director and head coach. Prior to joining the Metros, Konstin also served as the USASA Amateur Men’s National Team coach and a FIFA Futsal instructor. Konstin founded Houstonians FC and a recreational soccer program in Houston, Texas, which now has more than 4,000 players. He also holds a USSF ‘A’ coaching license, an NSCAA Premier Diploma and a Scottish FA UEFA ‘A’ license.

Konstin began his playing career at the University of San Francisco, where he was a member of a national championship team. He has also played professionally for the Golden Gate Gales of the American Soccer League, semi-pro Greek Americans, and the United States National Futsal team.

“I’m excited to help this team to move forward,” said Konstin. “The Timbers give kids something to strive for, and I’m proud to be part of that.”

Galas joins the Timbers after serving as an assistant coach with the University of Oregon. He has also served as the state director of goalkeeping for the New Mexico Youth Soccer Association and the co-director of coaching for Coerver Coaching Oregon. Galas currently holds his USSF ‘B’ license and is an ‘A’ license candidate. He has also taken training courses at the University of Liverpool in England.

“I’m absolutely delighted to work for this organization,” said Galas, who will be serving as the goalkeeper coach with the Timbers. “I am thrilled to be working with a group of individuals who are committed and passionate about the game of soccer and seeing it succeed in Portland.”

Prior to joining the University of Oregon, Galas spent three years as a goalkeeper coach at Florida State University from 2000-03. He also had an additional stint with the University of Oregon’s women’s soccer team, serving as an assistant coach. Galas is the former director and head coach of the Eugene Goalkeeping Academy.

“John and Cony will strengthen and complete our coaching staff,” said Chris Agnello, head coach and general manager of the Timbers. “John came with numerous recommendations and is a great fit for our needs, and Cony is a local coach who brings a different perspective to the team.”
