TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL First Division and USL Second Division Teams of the Week for the sixth week of the season, honoring Rochester’s Matthew Delicâte and Charlotte’s Jacob Coggins as the Players of the Week, respectively.
The 2006 USL-1 finalist Rochester Rhinos pushed their record back to an even .500 mark at 3-3-3 for the season with a 2-0 victory over Miami FC Sunday on a pair of strikes from Matthew Delicâte, ending the striker’s drought for the season.
Delicâte wasted no time, scoring his first goal in the 16th minute. Rhinos forward Mike Ambersley stretched to get the ball to Delicâte who slipped it into the lower right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
Delicâte struck again in the 61st minute after Menyongar made a nifty move inside the penalty area around Hannigan and with defenders blocking the goal, slid a pass to Delicâte who snuck a shot past the group of sprawling Miami defenders.
The 2006 USL-2 finalist Charlotte Eagles kept pace with the unbeaten defending champion Richmond Kickers with a pair of road victories on the weekend with Jacob Coggins providing three goals and two assists in the effort.
The Charlotte Eagles opened the scoring at Western Mass Friday in the 12th minute of play when veteran forward Jacob Coggins scored off a serve into the box by defender Steve Shak. It was Coggins' sixth goal of the season in just six games played. The Eagles would go on to see the Pioneers tie the match before falling on an own goal created from Dustin Swinehart.
The following night in New Hampshire it was the Coggins Show as he set up the first talley before scoring twice for a 3-0 lead en route to the 3-2 victory.
Danny Harvey scored the opening goal for Charlotte in the 30th minute. The goal came off the corner kick which was collected by Jacob Coggins. Coggins touched a pass over to Harvey and Harvey finished it for the 1-0 lead from about 8 yards out.
Six minutes later Charlotte extended their lead to two goals, and it was Coggins and Harvey doing the damage once again. Charlotte moved the ball into the New Hampshire end with crisp passing. Jacob Coggins played the ball forward for Danny Harvey who played it back onto the run of Coggins. Coggins scored with a solid shot to the upper corner from 18 yards out. That goal finished up the first half scoring as Charlotte entered halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Jacob Coggins scored his second goal of the match in the 68th minute. This time it was Ross Spencer setting up the goal. Spencer beat his defender and darted down the right flank. Spencer served it into the box for Coggins who put it away with proper placement.
Note:
All future USL-1 and USL-2 Team and Player of the Week announcements will be made on Tuesdays for the remainder of the 2007 season.
