PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Timbers defender Justin Thompson’s game-winning goal in a 1-0 win on Aug. 23 was selected as the USL First Division Goal of the Week for Week 19. Thompson was also chosen by fans as the Timbers’ “Man of the Month” for August.
In the Timbers’ regular-season home finale at PGE Park on Aug. 23, Thompson scored his first goal of the season to help Portland earn a 1-0 win over the Charleston Battery. In the 79th minute, Thompson looped a loose ball from 23 yards out inside the far post over Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock. He is the second Timbers player to earn Goal of the Week this season – defender Leonard Griffin received the honor in Week 4.
Thompson, 26, was named the team’s “Man of the Month” for the month of August by fans through a poll at www.portlandtimbers.com. In August, Thompson was an important component of the Timbers defense that allowed just seven goals in eight matches and recorded three shutouts. He earned his second USL First Division Team of the Week selection with his goal last week.
In 21 matches this season, Thompson has logged 1,845 minutes and tallied one goal and one assist. He also scored a goal in U.S. Open Cup action against the Seattle Sounders on June 26. Thompson joined the Timbers this season in May after playing the last two with England’s Worcester City FC.
Portland heads back to the East Coast to face the expansion Carolina RailHawks on Saturday at SAS Soccer Park; kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. (Pacific). A live broadcast of the match will be available at www.portlandtimbers.com.
The Timbers return to PGE Park on Sept. 16, for the first round of the 2007 USL First Division playoffs. Tickets, starting at $12, are available at the PGE Park box office, area Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (503) 224-4400.
