Portland advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since the 2001 season with a 3-1 aggregate-series win over the defending-champion Vancouver Whitecaps in the first round. After a 1-0 loss in the first game of the series, the Timbers responded with a 3-0 win over Vancouver at PGE Park on Sept. 16. Defender Justin Thompson, midfielder Andrew Gregor and forward Jaime Ambriz all scored to help the Timbers win just the second playoff series in modern-franchise history.
Atlanta (12-9-7, 43pts) advanced to the semifinals after defeating the Rochester Raging Rhinos on an aggregate score of 3-2 in the first round. Its win in the first round marked the first time in team history Atlanta had won a playoff series or had advanced past the first round. The Silverbacks finished the 2007 regular season in fourth place in the USL First Division.
