Timbers Notebook: Higgins on another playoff run

PORTLAND
, Ore.

Midfielder
Shaun Higgins
is gearing up for another playoff run in 2007. This time he’ll coach the boy’s varsity team from Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton against Riverdale on Friday to determine the school’s placement in the 2007 OSAA 3A/2A/1A playoffs.
Playoff matches begin Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Higgins began the 2007 season with Valley Catholic as the team’s assistant coach with 2007 Portland Timbers teammate
Leonard Griffin
serving as the head coach. When Griffin signed with the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer in late September, Higgins inherited the team’s head coach position. Under Griffin and Higgins, Valley Catholic has recorded a 7-5-2 record and had five players receive all-league honors in 2007.
The 2007 season is Higgins’ first as a head coach at the high school level.
Several members of the Timbers 2007 squad actively coach in the greater-Portland area. At the high school level, defender
Scot Thompson
currently serves the girl’s varsity coach at Oregon Episcopal School while defender
Garrett Marcum
is the head coach of the girl’s junior varsity team at Lake Oswego High School.
With the Timbers in 2007, Higgins appeared in 23 matches and logged 1,680 minutes. In the 2007 playoffs, Higgins recorded an assist in the Timbers 3-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at PGE Park in the first round.
