Week 3 of training camp underway

PORTLAND
, Ore.
– With the third week of preseason training camp underway, the Portland Timbers used Tuesday’s training session at PGE Park to help prepare for their first preseason action of the 2008 season.
Portland opens its 2008 preseason slate this weekend with matches on Friday and Sunday. On Friday, the Timbers face Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex at 7:30 p.m. The club then makes a trip to Forest Grove, Ore., on Sunday to play Gonzaga University in a preseason contest at Lincoln Park Stadium at 2 p.m. near the Pacific University campus.
Tickets for Friday’s match against the Earthquakes start at $10, and are available through the UP box office, area Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (503) 224-4400. Tickets for Sunday’s match will only be available on game day and are $5 for adults and $2 for youth 17 and under.
Entering the third Week 3 of preseason training, second-year head coach Gavin Wilkinson has just a handful of trialists remaining in camp.
Fitting just right:
On Monday, the new trays that fill in the baseball cutouts in the new FieldTurf surface were given their first test as the Timbers played a full-field scrimmage at the end of training. Nearly complete, the trays were built and installed over the weekend and then removed following Monday’s training session with new specialized machinery. Hand-constructed, the trays will be finished in the coming weeks.
On tap:
The Timbers will train for the remainder of the week with preseason matches on Friday and Sunday. Week 4 begins Monday, March 31.
