USL Week 4 Pro honors announced

Patterson and Ruud Players of the Week
TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL First Division and USL Second Division Team of the Week honors Tuesday for Week 4 of the season, honoring Charleston’s Randi Patterson and Cleveland’s Adam Ruud as the Players of the Week, respectively.
After playing to a 2-2 draw in the season opener in South Florida, the Battery used home field advantage to post a 3-1 victory in their second meeting with the Miami FC Blues Friday night.
An initial Miami lead lasted just over twenty minutes as the Battery pressed for an equalizer, cheered by a large and vocal home crowd. After a spell of pressure Charleston worked the ball to forward Lester More whose shot was blocked at the far post. Patterson was first to the loose ball and lashed a shot into the roof of the goal.
With a 2-1 lead going into the final minutes Patterson put the game beyond doubt in the 86th minute with a superb headed finish. It was a second assist for Mike Richardson who whipped in curling free-kick that Patterson rose to meet at the back post.
Patterson came to the Charleston Battery from Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls. Patterson spent his rookie season with New York in 2007 but did not see action in any games. In 2006, he helped guide the Carolina Dynamo to an unbeaten season (14-0-2) in the PDL, finishing third in goals and points with 15 goals and three assists in 14 games. His efforts garnered All-Conference and All-League honors.
Cleveland, which lost just once last season, retained its unbeaten status on the season (2-0-2) with a 4-0 victory over the visiting Real Maryland Monarchs Saturday night. Adam Ruud scored twice for the City Stars.
Cleveland coach Martin Rennie worked on offensive spacing during the week in an attempt to open up the offense but it did not pay off until the 48th minute when Cleveland found Sallieu Bundu alone on the left wing. Bundu found Adam Ruud on the cross and the midfielder found the net through Real Maryland defender Daryl Ferguson for a 1-0 Cleveland lead.
The City Stars continued the second half dominance in the 63rd minute on a great play. Derek Potteiger danced through the defense and found the head of the 6’3" Mark Schulte on a lengthy cross into the box. Instead of forcing the shot, the unselfish Schulte set up Ruud for an open net header for a 3-0 Cleveland lead.
Ruud came to Cleveland from the Charlotte Eagles. The crafty forward notched four goals and three assists in 18 games last season for the Eagles.
