Portland Timbers goalkeeper
Brad Knighton
was on call for the New England Revolution’s U.S. Open Cup loss Tuesday to D.C. United in Washington, D.C. Knighton, on loan this season from New England of MLS, will return to Portland Wednesday.
New England suffered a 3-1 loss to D.C. United at RFK Stadium in the semifinal round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday. Knighton was recalled just for Tuesday’s match and served as the backup to goalkeeper Joe Warren – a former member of the Minnesota Thunder.
With the win, D.C. United advances to the U.S. Open Cup final and will play host to the USL First Division’s Charleston Battery, who defeated the Seattle Sounders in a penalty-kick shootout to earn their first U.S. Open Cup finals appearance, on Sept. 3 in Washington, D.C.
Knighton, 23, joined the Timbers on loan from the Revolution for the remainder of the season on July 2. In seven matches with the Timbers, Knighton has recorded 24 saves, a 1.29 goals-against average and one shutout. He was named to the USL First Division Team of the Week in Week 15.
The Timbers play host to the Montreal Impact on Saturday at PGE Park at 7 p.m. Saturday’s contest is also Takayuki Suzuki Bobblehead Night presented by Toyota and will be broadcast live on FSN. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Suzuki bobblehead.
