PORTLAND, Ore.
–In recognition of his exemplary efforts in making a difference off the playing field this season, Portland Timbers defender
Scot Thompson
today was named the club’s Community Player of the Year for the 2010 season.
Thompson, 29, most exemplified the goals of the Timbers Community Outreach Program by making a positive impact on community values and lending his time and energy to a number of causes and philanthropic activities throughout the season.
Serving in a dual role as a player and community ambassador this season, Thompson lent hours of his time to numerous community events and coordinated over 50 team appearances in the greater-Portland area. He attended several fundraisers and auctions benefitting schools in the Portland community; read to students at a local elementary school; made multiple visits to children’s hospitals; participated in several community youth soccer clinics and was on hand at the $50,000 grant announcement for the Parkrose Regional Soccer Center in May.
Thompson will be presented with a commemorative painting produced by local artist
Ken Rumbaugh
in recognition of his efforts throughout the season in a presentation following tonight’s match against the Puerto Rico Islanders.
A member of the Timbers since 2004, Thompson is the club’s modern-franchise career leader in games played with 153 regular-season appearances. In his seven seasons with Portland, Thompson has logged nearly 13,000 minutes on the pitch, nine goals and nine assists. He’s a two-time USL First Division all-league defender (2005, 2007) and was named one of United Soccer Leagues’ Top 25 Players from the USL First Division in the 2000s.
