PORTLAND, Ore.— The Portland Timbers announced today that defender Kevin Goldthwaite sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in addition to a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury to his left knee during Saturday’s 1-0 victory over the Chicago Fire. Goldthwaite was examined by Timbers physician Dr. Richard H. Edelson and underwent an MRI at Sports Medicine Oregon on Monday; Goldthwaite will miss the remainder of the 2011 season.
Goldthwaite, 28, will undergo surgery to repair his knee after swelling from the injury suffered early in the first half of Saturday’s game subsides. Goldthwaite is expected to be out 5-7 months while recovering.
