Monday Postgame: Americans make news in England

Monday Postgame, 1.30.12

While the Timbers today creating a huge splash with their signing of new Designated Player Kris Boyd, there were many American players with MLS ties making waves throughout Europe this past week as well.

Most notably was Friday's FA Cup clash between Landon Donovan's Everton and Clint Dempsey's Fulham. Much was made about their head-to-head match-up--which it is easy to say Donovan won given his two sublime assists in their 2-1 victory--but not to be lost in the shuffle was Everton and USMNT goalkeeper Tim Howard's strong performance. It was a much discussed and much tweeted match in American soccer circles. But really, what is the benefit of pitting Donovan vs. Dempsey? Both are dynamic but different players and both have made huge impacts for the US.

Another USMNT player also arrived in England this past week with New York Red Bulls completing the transfer of centerback Tim Read to Bolton in the EPL. Bolton has flirted with Philadelphia Union striker Sebastien Le Toux as well but his future there remains up in the air. Should he stay or should he go? Time will tell.
