Portland Timbers Corporate Cup kicks off Saturday

Corporate Cup

The second annual Portland Timbers Corporate Cup, a charity soccer tournament involving a wide range of area businesses, kicks off at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning at the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District’s Howard M. Terpenning Complex.

Over the course of the tournament, Pacific Northwest corporations will have the opportunity to network, compete on the field and help raise money to benefit local non-profit organization and Timbers' Stand Together Community Parther: Portland YouthBuilders. PYB is a local organization that provides life-changing opportunities to very low-income youth through an integrated program of education, vocational training, leadership development, and personalized counseling.

This year’s tournament features three levels of competition with a Men’s Recreational division added to the already established Men’s Competitive and Coed divisions due to the number of businesses fielding teams increasing from seven in the tournament's inaugural 2011 season to eleven teams in 2012. Group-stage play, which qualifies teams for each of the division’s championship match, will take place Saturday and Sunday. The three championship games are scheduled to be played at JELD-WEN Field the following weekend on Aug. 18.

This season’s Portland Timbers Corporate Cup teams represent area businesses including second time participants: adidas, CMD Agency, Microsoft, Nike, Tursi’s Soccer Store and Wieden + Kennedy plus newcomers: Alaska AIrlines, Lompoc Brewing, Providence Health Systems and Widmer Brothers Brewing. The Timbers front office is also fielding a team as well.

“When this opportunity came to use last year we were excited about being a part of it, so we were just as excited to be a part of the event again in 2012,” said adidas’ MLS Coordinator Jeff McAllister. “[The Portland Timbers] Corporate Cup has helped to give our adidas employees a chance to both represent adidas outside the company and to be a part of something that is benefiting the local community.”

The 2011 edition of the Portland Timbers Corporate Cup raised $10,000 for PYB through contestant entry fees, ticket sales generated by over 500 fans who took in the finals of the Men’s Competitive and Coed brackets and a raffle held during the two championship matches.

With an expanded field and increased awareness of this year’s event, the Portland Timbers aim to continue making a positive impact in the community through our relationships with local businesses and our Stand Together partnership with Portland YouthBuilders.
