Reasons for MLS All-Star: Michael Harrington

Michael Harrington, 2013 MLS All-Star

It's rare for defenders to show up on the score sheet, but Michael Harrington doesn't need goals and assists to prove that he has been exceptional at his position this season. The former first round MLS SuperDraft pick spent six seasons in Kansas City where he finished third in MLS Rookie of the Year voting in his first season.

In 2013, Harrington has helped solidify the outside back position for the Portland Timbers. His contributions this season have made him a clear candidate for his inclusion in the 2013 MLS All-Star Game on July 31, 2013 against AS Roma.

In this clip, see how Harrington helps clear the ball away and then flies up the left wing to help play in a cross into the box.

  • Started in 16 of the first 17 matches of the regular season

  • Helped the backline record a fifth consecutive shutout at home in a 1-0 victory against FC Dallas on June 15
  • Made his Timbers debut March 3 against New York; the season opener also marked his 150th career MLS apperance
