World Cup: What does history tell us about all 31 of the USMNT's potential 2014 opponents?

USMNT group shot

As the United States national team awaits its group-phase fate in Friday's 2014 FIFA World Cup Draw (8:30am PT, ESPN2), let's take a look and see which countries the Stars and Stripes match up best against historically – as well as those they'd rather avoid.

Against nations from Europe and South America – not surprisingly – the Americans hold a winning record against just one team. That would be Bosnia-Herzegovina, which the US beat in August in their only meeting.

If you're looking for good matchups for the States in group play, cross your fingers and hope Portugal and Uruguay end up with Jurgen Klinsmann's side. The USMNT have played each of those nations evenly, with 2-2-1 and 2-2-2 records respectively.

Against nations from Africa and Asia, the sample size is too small to truly pinpoint a team you'd want to round out group play. However, it's safe to say you'd want to avoid Ghana at all costs, a nation that has essentially bounced the US from the previous two World Cups.
