MLS WORKS & Portland Timbers to host All-Star Community Day presented by Wells Fargo in Montavilla Park

MLS All-Star Community Day

NEW YORK (July 31, 2014) – In celebration of the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game, MLS WORKS, Major League Soccer’s community outreach initiative, and Stand Together, the charitable initiative of the Portland Timbers, are collaborating with Portland Parks & Recreation to host the MLS WORKS/Portland Timbers All-Star Community Day presented by Wells Fargo on Monday, August 4 in Montavilla Park.

As part of the celebration, members of the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star team, including Diego Valeri (Portland Timbers), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy) and Obafemi Martins (Seattle Sounders FC) will join Portland Timbers CEO Merritt Paulson, Timbers President of Business Operations Mike Golub, and Major League Soccer Chief Administrative Officer JoAnn Neale to unveil and dedicate a new futsal court, the Portland Timbers Field at Montavilla Park presented by adidas, to the local community.

Continuing to foster an environment of reduced waste, recycled turf from Providence Park was installed as the surface of the new field.

Community members are encouraged to come out to enjoy carnival games and inflatables while cheering on more than 100 U-14 boys and girls from the adidas Portland Timbers Alliance Clubs as they compete in a round-robin futsal (five-a-side) tournament on the new field.

In addition to the tournament, children ages eight to 12 may register for age-based soccer clinics administered by the Portland Timbers Camps coaches. For more information or to register, families should call (503) 823-4101 or CLICK HERE.

Major League Soccer, through MLS WORKS, is committed to creating sustainable projects that support local youth programs and encourage healthy, active lifestyles. The new futsal court in Montavilla Park will not only serve as a lasting legacy of the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game, but it also aligns directly with the Timbers’ mission to harness the power of sport to improve the lives of children and families in the Portland metro area.

As the presenting sponsor, Wells Fargo will have 30 team members on-hand to help support the day’s activities. This volunteerism builds on the company’s deeper commitment to the Portland community, which includes over $10 million in support to schools and nonprofit groups across Oregon in 2013.
