Where In The World: Thorns FC players busy with international duty, World Cup qualifiers

The U.S. Women’s National Team recorded a convincing 8-0 victory against Mexico on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Thorns FC forward Alex Morgan featured and played all 90 minutes in the match as she recorded a brace and three assists. Thorns FC midfielder Tobin Heath came into the game a substitute in the 60th minute.


Morgan’s two goals on Saturday bring her total to 48 for the United States, moving her to 10th on the all-time scoring list. Morgan also has 31 career assists, which ranks her 12th on the all-time list.



The United States and Mexico meet for a second time on Thursday, Sept. 18, at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, New York; kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. (Pacific). Defender Rachel Van Hollebeke, the Thorns FC Community Player of the Year, and a group of U.S. Women’s National Team players took some time out of their busy schedules while in Salt Lake City, Utah to visit the Boys and Girls Club.  

Thorns FC goalkeeper Nadine Angerer was also busy on international duty, starting both matches in group play as Germany looked to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Angerer and Germany earned a 4-1 victory against Russia on Saturday in Moscow, qualifying them for Women’s World Cup in Canada next June. Germany finished up group play today with a 2-0 win against Ireland today as Angerer registered a shutout in goal. Angerer will next switch gears as she heads to Australia to begin play with the Brisbane Roar. The Roar dropped its first game, 2-1, to Perth Glory and face off against Sydney FC in its second match of the season on Saturday.


Thorns FC defender Steph Catley opened her 2014 W-League campaign with the Melbourne Victory over the weekend against Newcastle. The Jets earned a 1-0 victory over the Victory. Catley captained the side and played all 90 minutes in the match. Melbourne looks to bounce back this week in its game against Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday.

Amber Brooks and Bayern Munich FC were idle last week with European teams competing in World Cup qualifiers. Bayern Munich FC returns to action this week against Hoffenheim on Sunday. Brooks had a chance to catch Bayern Munich’s men’s side in action during her week off in both domestic and UEFA Champions League action.
