A tough road trip to California over the weekend saw the Timbers U-16s move up to third place in the Northwest Division standings following a 1-0 win over De Anza Force U-16s.

Samuel Buzzas (Bend, Ore.) scored in the 82nd minute as he tallied a goal for a second consecutive match to give the Timbers U-16s (4-3-2, 14pts) the victory over De Anza Force U-16s on Saturday at De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif. The result extended the Timbers U-16s unbeaten streak to five consecutive matches. The run was ended on Sunday, however, in a 4-1 loss against the Santa Cruz Breakers U-16s on Sunday at Cabrillo College in Aptos, Calif. Joe Corner (Salem, Ore.) tallied the lone goal for Portland, his fourth goal in eight appearances this season.

The Timbers U-16s have earned at least one point in six of their last eight matches.

A second-half comeback fell just short as the Timbers U-18s (1-7-1, 4pts) tried to surmount a three-goal deficit in a 3-2 loss against De Anza Force U-18s on Saturday. Reid Baez (Salem, Ore.) scored a brace with goals in the 49th and 73rd minutes. Baez, a University of Portland commit, leads the Timbers U-18s with five goals in nine appearances. Taking on the Santa Cruz Breakers U-18s on Sunday, a tightly contested match ended in a 1-0 defeat for Portland as the Breakers tallied the game-winner in the 65th minute.

The Timbers Academy teams return home to play host to the Crossfire Premier Academy teams at the adidas Timbers Training Center on Saturday, Nov. 22 in their final matches of the 2014 calendar year. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (Pacific) for the Timbers U-18s and 3:30 p.m. (Pacific) for the Timbers U-16s. Following Saturday’s matches, the Timbers Academy teams will resume regular-season play on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015.
