Thorns FC Q&A: Christine Sinclair excited to play in FIFA Women's World Cup in home country of Canada

PORTLAND, Ore. - Thorns FC forward Christine Sinclair was named to her fourth FIFA Women’s World Cup squad  Monday as a member of the Canada National Women’s Team. The former University of Portland Pilot and Thorns team captain talked about her excitement of making the team and her appreciation of the Portland fans.

Q: What was your initial reaction when you learned that Canada would host the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup?
Christine Sinclair:  “The first thing I thought about was how this is going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Very few players get the chance to play in a home World Cup in front of their friends and family. I truly believe this World Cup could change the sport of soccer in Canada.”

This will be your fourth World Cup appearance, how does your approach to 2015 differ from previous World Cups, mentally and physically?
CS:  “I’m heading into this World Cup the most confident I have ever been. Being at home, this World Cup is going to offer many different challenges and stresses, so my main focus right now is on the mental side of the game. Our national team has been training together for many months now, so I know we will be physically and tactically ready.”

You’ve been on the road quite a bit. What do you miss most about Portland when you’re away with the Canada Women’s National Team?
CS:  “Since I graduated from the University of Portland, I have considered Portland my home. I miss everything while I’m gone: my friends, the unique feel of the city, and being part of the Thorns organization.”

What do you enjoy most about being a member of the Thorns FC and competing in the National Women’s Soccer League?
CS:  “I truly believe Portland Thorns FC is the best female club in the world. It is an honor to represent the club, city and the fans. The best part of being a member of Thorns FC is walking out for a home game in front of the best fans in the world. I am grateful every day for being a part of this organization.”
